The first meeting of the 2017 Malden Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) Committee took place on January 23, 2017 at the John & Christina Markey Community Center (“Senior Center”). Meeting participants included members of the Committee, with representation from the Malden Redevelopment Authority, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) the Mayor’s Office, individuals representing various citizen organizations and residents. Several members of the public also attended.

The original committee and initial meeting announcement can be found at:

A number of work activities have been outlined in the “Draft Outline of Work Elements”. A draft “Table of Contents” was also discussed along with a DRAFT Survey. In addition to the survey, two public meetings are planned. The first public meeting is designed to present preliminary findings and “solicit input that will be used to generate a community vision and goals.” A second public meeting “will focus on obtaining public input on the draft recommendations and the Action Plan Map. This meeting will [be] ...for the general public...hosted in conjunction with a local organization representing … one of the harder-to-reach segments of the population (e.g., youth, seniors, linguistically isolated, low income).” Both meetings will be widely advertised to the general public.

The OSRP is a required document for municipalities to have when submitting grant applications related to open space and park related funding requests. The OSRP is valid for seven years. You can find a scanned copy of the 2009 plan at

The committee’s goal is to have a DRAFT Plan in place by June 2017 so that this could be used to submit with grant requests. A FINAL Plan document will follow the DRAFT as soon as possible, and will be made widely available to the public.
